New Google Labs project

This week, Google released a new Google Labs project – App Inventor for Android. The product is designed to let anybody (as in non-developers) create Android Apps. This could go one of several ways. It could fade away into the graveyard of Google Labs projects that never became full-fledged products, it could get a handful of users, or it could change the web, the mobile industry, and user interaction with both very significantly.

Do you think this wil result in lots of amatuer / bad apps?

Twitter Lets You Automatically Follow Your Facebook Friends

HUGE: Twitter Lets You Automatically Follow Your Facebook Friends

Twitter has announced that it is launching major upgrades to its Facebook and LinkedIn applications, bringing added functionality and integration between Twitter and two of the world’s largest social networks.

The new Twitter app for Facebook, not only allows you to syndicate your tweets to the world’s largest social network, but now has a feature that allow users to see which of their Facebook friends are also on Twitter and choose which ones they want to follow.

The new feature could be huge: it brings existing Facebook connections into the Twitterverse, which is likely to spur new levels of engagement and growth. We’ve already seen a fail whale or two in our testing of the new Facebook app though, making us worry that the new feature could cause downtime.

The microblogging startup is also announcing updates to tweets, LinkedIn’s Twitter application. LinkedIn beefed up its twitter integration last month. It also includes a feature that lets you see which of your LinkedIn connections you follow and automatically follow the ones that you don’t.

Big brands turn to social networking for world cup

Coca-Cola’s Longest Celebration, Budweiser’s BudUnited, and other initiatives tap social networks to win over fans of the soccer tournament.

Showcase a video of Cameroon soccer player Roger Milla’s famous wiggle dance from the 1990 World Cup. Add the inspirational song, “Wavin Flag,” sung by Somali-Canadian artist K’naan.

Capitalize on the excitement over the World Cup, asking soccer fans to join the “Longest Celebration” and upload a video or image showing their version of a “celebratory corner flag dance.” And toss in a chance to win prizes, including tickets to the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup, and you’ve got the foundation for Coca-Cola’s World Cup promotional campaign.

Like other brands looking to capture the attention of soccer fans during the world’s most popular sporting event, Coca-Cola has turned to YouTube to host this lively campaign, coupled with rich media ads on the YouTube homepage, a Facebook presence, and TV spots during U.K. match broadcasts urging users to take part.

Google New Twitter Ad Format

In October 2009, Google announced a deal with Twitter to include tweets in its search results. Now Google is looking to make good on its investment with a new kind of display ad that lets advertisers attract more followers to their Twitter accounts.

Ads appear in a box with the Twitter bird icon in the lower left-hand corner and the advertisers’ latest tweet in the center. To the lower right is a button prompting viewers to follow the advertiser on Twitter (Twitter), which they can do without having to leave Google (Google). Clicking on any other part of the ad directs the user to the advertiser’s Twitter page, however.
