A lot of valuable information to help in promoting your site can be found from looking into who your top competitors are and how they have become the most visible businesses in your marketplace. By performing a detailed competitor analysis, it is possible to look at any high ranking site and work out the reasons why it has a top position. Most importantly, we can use their success as a model for your own site – by replicating their online marketing strategies and applying the methods they use to develop your site so that it can potentially outrank theirs in the search engines.

This works well when you identify the number 1 positions on your keywords to construct good link building strategies. There are many online tools that help you highlight the number of back links a website has, here is a quick simple method:

1. Identify your competitors

Search on Google for your main keyword and take note of the number 1 position, if it is a competitive keyword you may also want to jot down the number 5 position. Comparing your website against these can give you a realistic target, in some cases number 1 may be large websites such as wikipedia and your not going to compete against these (you don’t want to!).

2. Compare Back Links

Next we search on Google and Yahoo and compile a list of back links.

You do this by simple searching on Google:

link:http://www.domainname.co.uk

In Yahoo you simple search for

linkdomain:http://www.domainname.co.uk

3. Checking the links

It is now worth checking out each link to see if it will be of any benefit to your campaign. Your looking for a few things, it must be a similar / relevant theme to your business field first and foremost,  the page rank will give you an idea of the importance of the page.

4. Link Building

Once you have established a strong list of good links you can start contacting the websites, adding your self to any good directories, blog commenting etc.. If your competitor had a great article linked from the website – get writing, or get someone that can write, I guess you understand the tactic.

5. Measurement Control

Be sure that any work you put it has an effect, whether you move up 1 place you need to know. Before you start make a note of your keyword positions, page content / link counts as you need to compare these monthly to make sure your having an effect.
