Twitter Growing to a Billion Members
Oct 13th
The co-founders of social media giant Twitter shared the stage addressed the criticism that Twitter had gone mainstream at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. Evan Williams started off by asking what “going mainstream” meant, he also pointed out that Twitter gains more than 1.8 million new signups each week. Both Evan and Biz Stone went on to say how well the New Twitter roll out had been received. The goal of the new design, Biz Stone said, was to keep Twitter’s inherent simplicity intact while adding the richness and content people are linking to.
When asked if Twitter would reach the Billion mark Williams said:
“Twitter will get to a billion members.” He quickly added it wouldn’t be the same billion individuals as Facebook, and he wouldn’t specify just how long it would take to reach that goal. This refers to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg claim that Facebook would reach 1 billion after it had surpassed the 500 million user mark.
Gap bows down to the power of Social Media
Oct 12th
Gap has announced on its Facebook Page that it is scrapping its new logo design efforts, due to a heap of criticism coming primarily from Facebook and Twitter users.
Last week, Gap unveiled a new logo, one it called “a more contemporary, modern expression.” The retailer’s customers were not so thrilled about the change, and Gap decided to ask users for their logo design ideas instead. However, that course of action has now been reversed, as well.
“Ok. We’ve heard loud and clear that you don’t like the new logo. We’ve learned a lot from the feedback,” the company said on its Facebook (Facebook) page. “We only want what’s best for the brand and our customers. So instead of crowdsourcing, we’re bringing back the Blue Box tonight.”
According to Gap, the original logo will make its return “across all channels.”
The backlash against the Gap’s new (and now defunct) logo was intense. Beyond the thousands of tweets and Facebook status updates deriding its design, people found other creative ways to protest the new logo. A fake Twitter account has gathered thousands of followers, while Gap logo generators have quickly gone viral.

Foursquare Down for Nine Hours
Oct 5th
Users were saddened and angered today by a marathon outage at Foursquare.
The dominant player in the geolocation/social space has been out for nine hours so far; while staff say engineers are peering at “the light at the end of a tunnel,” we have no exact word on why the service is down or precisely when it will come back online.
Earlier today, a staffer posted on the company’s official Twitter account, “The servers are overloaded but we’re working on it! We will be back up ASAP.” This message was followed by the hashtag #caseofthemondays, a reference to a quotation from Office Space. A variant of this hashtag popped up in an update six hours later, indicating the engineering team had made little headway in repairing the server issues.
Then, about one hour ago, @Foursquare tweeted that the company’s entire engineering team had been called to work on the servers, vowing #NoSleepTillUptime.
Another Fousquare staffer wrote in an email, “Our engineers are working nonstop to get the site back up and running as quickly as possible. We’ll be putting up a detailed post mortem once we’ve resolved the issue tomorrow.”
UPDATE: Foursquare is back up again! A hearty congratulations to the engineers for restoring service shortly before midnight More >
