Google Demo Slam – Trying to convince you its product are cool
Oct 21st
Google Slam visitors are asked to create their own slam videos to highlight Google technology. Contenders upload their videos to YouTube and Google will select the best ones to go head to head.
Robert Wong, Executive Creative Director of the Creative Lab R commented on Google Demo Slam prior to release. Wong spoke about the experimental work the gang at Googleplex work on that no-one knows about and that this was the best way to highlight all that’s new in a easy / fun method.
“We’re like engineering elves at Santa’s workshop,” he says, “we know this stuff is good.”
I like it and have just checked my first slam competition.
In the Blue corner… was a bunch of guys recreating Mount Rushmore with paper mache and their own heads.. They then used Google Googles to take a picture of their creation….. Google Googles recognized it as Mount Rushmore…cool huh!
In the Green corner… this was three young children (The Paul Brothers) putting Google Search by voice through its motion by saying Chubby Bunny with marsh mellows in their mouths. If Google Search by voice recognised the words they won a point… nice…
I voted for the Green corner.. give it a go yourself.
Apple App Store is Down
Oct 21st
Apple’s online store has was temporarily taken down, just hours before the company’s “Back to Mac” event is scheduled to start.
It looks like a new Macbook Air could be making its way into the store as we speak. It may be time to trade in some of your hard-earned pocket money for a shiny new toy from Steve Jobs’s workshop.
Google Places enhanced listing are essential to all Localised Businesses
Oct 21st
Google suggests that nearly 20% of all searches in the USA & UK have local intent. This makes it much more important for all companies to have both localised content on their pages as well as having a Google Places listing.
Add Localised content & localised pages to your website If your company provides services to customers in North London and you add this information to your website they may be able to find you of the search for North London but they will not find you if they search for your service in Highgate even though this is within your catchment area. You need to talk about all the places that you do work in so that every combination of your service and place has the potential to come up in the search engines. If you target specific areas or you find that a specific area holds your target audience then make extra pages on your website specifically about providing your service in that specific place. Google Places Google places listing are what appears as pointers on the map near the top of some localised searches. These listing are highly relevant to what is being searched for and well performing listing can More >
Ubercabe – The future of Online Taxi Ordering?
Oct 21st
UberCab is an on demand car service that allows you to request, track and ride with ultimate convenience. Payment is cashless and hassle free.
Genius Idea: It’s not as if urban cities such as San Francisco are ever devoid of cabbies or car service drivers — they’re out there, just never when you really need a ride. And then when you do manage to hail a ride, you better be carrying cash lest you want to get the evil eye from the driver.
Young startup UberCab has set out to tackle these transportation travails one city at a time, starting in San Francisco.
UberCab is equal one part iPhone app, one part web service and one part SMS command-driven operation. Once you register for the service, you can then use either option to request car service, get a speedy turnaround pickup, track the progress of your pending ride and automatically pay via the app with the credit card you have on file.
UberCab rates are typically 1.5 times the cost of taxi fare, but the service guarantees prompt arrival within minutes and delivers a much more luxurious vehicle so you can ride in style.
What’s interesting about UberCab is that the iPhone application [iTunes link] More >
Facebook Stops Showing Pictures of Your EX
Oct 21st
Facebook is doing its very best not to make you sad. It used to show pictures of your ex which may / may not have hurt a little. Photo memories appear in the top right corner of some Facebook pages which are chosen by Facebooks complex algorithm which tries to figure out who your most interested in. If you check it out you will notice it normally is old romances as you have spent more time looking through their profiles, pictures and wrote on their wall more then others. No one know exactly how the Facebook algorithm works but this user created a group to complain about this and Facebook Photos Project Manager Sam Odio took notice.
Yesterday he commented on a post about this issue Inside Facebook, saying, “I’d like to let you know that we’re listening to your feedback. The photo memories product no longer shows tagged photos of your friends if you were previously in a relationship with them.”
This is another clear sign of social media users making big brands stand up and listen and causing good change. Facebook are not changing the algorithm but instead will hide any pictures of past romances if you have selected them More >

Website Design / Blogging Platform Hits 100 Million Downloads
WordPress 3.0 Thelonious passed 3 million downloads last month, and today the plugin directory followed suit with a milestone of its own: 100 million downloads.
The WordPress community’s growth over the years has been tremendous, and we want to reinvest in it. So we’re taking the next two months to concentrate on improving WordPress.org. A major part of that will be improving the infrastructure of the plugins directory. More than 10,000 plugins are in the directory, every one of them GPL compatible and free as in both beer and speech. Here’s what we have in mind:
We want to provide developers the tools they need to build the best possible plugins. We’re going to provide better integration with the forums so you can support your users. We’ll make more statistics available to you so you can analyze your user base, and over time we hope to make it easier for you to manage, build, and release localized plugins.
We want to improve how the core software works with your plugin and the plugin directory. We’re going to focus on ensuring seamless upgrades by making the best possible determinations about compatibility, and offer continual improvements to More >
Mobile Ad Spending to Top $1 Billion in 2011
Oct 20th
The spending levels on mobile advertising is set to grow nearly 50% to exceed the 1 billion dollar mark in 2011 according to figures from researcher eMarketer.
This figure has sky rocketed recently due to the acquisition by Google of AdMob and Apples introduction of the iAd.
This shows that mobile advertising is actually growing faster than social media advertising. In August, eMarketer estimated that social media ad spend would grow over 20% this year to $1.68 billion in the U.S. That compares to the torrid 79% growth rate now projected for mobile, which brings the size of the market to $743 million by the end of 2010.
Albeit much smaller in total figures the growth is significantly more, saying this though the projections are that this will slow down pretty dramatically soon.
Productivity Heads to the Cloud
Oct 20th
Microsoft is stepping up its commitment to the cloud by launching the new Office 365, a service combining Microsoft Office 2010, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Lync Online with the cloud.
Kurt DelBane, president of Microsoft’s office division, announced at a San Francisco press event that Office 365 is a subscription service that integrates cloud-based syncing, collaboration and accessibility to businesses and organizations worldwide. So long as a device supports ActiveSync, customers can access their e-mail, calendars, team websites and office web apps from anywhere. The inclusion of Lync also means that Office 365 has videoconferencing capabilities.
There are two editions of Office 365. Office 365 for Small Businesses is designed for organizations of one to 25 people. It’s a pre-built package that includes Office Web Apps, Lync, e-mail sync and more. It doesn’t require IT support on the user’s end and will cost $6 per user per month.
The second version is Office 365 for Enterprises. Unlike the small business version, the enterprise edition can be customized based on an organization’s needs. It can be customized so different teams have different access levels to Office 365’s features. The enterprise edition comes with everything in the small business version, plus single sign-in, Office More >
